Route Overview
The Oskarshamn–Visby ferry is the route to Gotland for travellers coming from the Kalmar region, operated by Destination Gotland in around 3 to 3.5 hours. Visby, Gotland's walled medieval city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Sweden's most sought-after summer destinations. This crossing is somewhat quieter than the Nynäshamn route, but both fill up fast in July and August — especially around Medieval Week in early August. Booking well ahead is not optional in summer if you're travelling by car.
Operators & Schedule
Destination Gotland holds the long-term public service concession for Gotland ferry traffic, running both the Oskarshamn and Nynäshamn routes with a mix of high-speed ferries and standard ro-pax vessels depending on the season.
Onboard Services
Destination Gotland's vessels offer a restaurant, cafeteria, children's play area and indoor and outdoor seating. The daytime crossing needs no cabin. Deck views on arrival, as the Visby town wall emerges from the sea, are reason enough to be outside.
Oskarshamn
Oskarshamn is a town on the Swedish east coast in Kalmar county. The Destination Gotland terminal at Simpevarp is a short drive north of the town. The surrounding area includes the Blå Jungfrun national park island, reachable by boat in summer.
Visby
Visby is one of northern Europe's best-preserved medieval towns, its 12th-century ring wall still standing. The ferry terminal is just outside the wall and the old town is walkable from there. The rest of Gotland is flat and well suited to cycling.
