Route Overview
The Rostock–Nynäshamn ferry is a Baltic crossing of around 6–7 hours linking northern Germany directly with the port closest to Stockholm. Stena Line operates this route, primarily for freight but with full passenger facilities. For travellers coming from Germany, it avoids the need to cross all of Sweden from south to north — Nynäshamn is one hour from Stockholm by train. The route also sidesteps the busier Trelleborg bottleneck and can be a calmer option in peak summer.
Operators & Schedule
The route is operated by Stena Line with regular crossings serving both freight and passenger traffic. This is one of several Baltic routes Stena runs from German ports.
Onboard Services
Stena Line's vessels on this route include a restaurant, cafeteria, duty-free shop, cabins and passenger lounges. A short cabin rest is worthwhile for evening departures. The route is also viable as a daytime crossing.
Rostock
Rostock is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Germany's primary Baltic port. Stena Line's terminal at the Überseehafen is east of the city centre and accessible by local bus. Rostock itself has an attractive old town worth exploring.
Nynashamn
Nynäshamn is a small harbour town about 60 km south of Stockholm with a direct train to the capital (roughly 1 hour). It also serves as a gateway to the southern Stockholm archipelago.
