Gdańsk, on Poland's Baltic coast, is the EU's largest port on the Baltic Sea by cargo volume, handling 77.4 million tonnes of goods in 2024, and the second-busiest port in the Baltic overall after Ust-Luga in Russia. Beyond its role as a major commercial hub, Gdańsk carries a distinct historical weight: it was a leading city of the Hanseatic League, the site where the Second World War began at Westerplatte, and the birthplace of the Solidarność movement at its historic shipyard. From here, Polferries runs regular passenger and freight service to Nynäshamn, around 60 km south of Stockholm, with an overnight crossing of about 18 hours and up to seven departures a week. Onboard, travellers can expect comfortable cabins, restaurants, bars, and duty-free shopping, and the port's proximity to Gdańsk's Old Town makes it easy to combine the crossing with time exploring the city.
