About

Selje is a coastal municipality at the tip of the Selje peninsula in Vestland county, northwestern Norway, where the Stadtlandet headland — one of the most exposed stretches of the Norwegian coast — juts out into the Norwegian Sea. The area has a particular historical significance as the site of the Selje monastery, ruins of a medieval Benedictine abbey on the small island of Selja just offshore. The ferry connection at Selje links the municipality to the coastal network of Vestland, providing transport links for a community in a fairly remote location. For visitors, the combination of the monastery ruins, the open coastal scenery and the sense of being at the edge of Norway's western extremity makes Selje a worthwhile detour from the main tourist routes.
